MSSRF organized a one day workshop on climate change for students and teachers on 24th of November 2017 as part of the implementation of ‘Distributed Weather Monitoring System and Child Climate Volunteers’ a project being supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala. The objective of the workshop was to give awareness on the changing climate of Wayanad, and making the students aware about the importance of agrobiodiversity in adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
The workshop was inaugurated by honourable District Collector Sri. Suhas IAS, who emphasized the need of awareness among students on issues related to climate change. He thanked the efforts of MSSRF in promoting conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity of Wayanad. He also stated that, if the ongoing project proves its potential to engage in student community to in conservation activities, District Administration will take necessary steps to replicate the efforts in other schools as well.
Shri. Girigan Gopi, Principal Scientist, Community Agrobiodiversity Centre of M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation officiated at the session and orated on the degradation of agricultural resources due to climate change. Presidential address was given by Dr. V. Balakrishnan Head, Community Agrobiodiversity Centre of M. S. Swaminathan Research foundation, and sermonized to the future of the project. Honoring ceremony was conducted for the winners of District level Children’s Science Congress, and also honored the students who are selected for the national level participation. Shri. C. Jayaraj, NGC Coordinator, Wayanad felicitated the gathering and he was also honored by honourable District Collector Sri.Suhas IAS for his achievement of best teacher award. Shrimati. Ninu Mehnaz, Project Ccordinator, MSSRF declaimed the vote of thanks. A technical session was delivered by Dr. C . P Shaji on climate change and biodiversity and the workshop was concluded with a guided tour to M.S. Swaminathan Botanical Garden.
