The new phase of the M S Swaminathan Botanical Garden launched at CAbC by Sri. M I Shanavas, The Honorable Member of Parliament, Wayanad.The immense contribution of CAbC in conservation of biodiversity and use of modern science in agriculture and rural development is to be held in esteem, he said.

The programme started with the message from Professor Swaminathan highlighted on achieving the vision of ‘Bio-happiness’ integrating agriculture, nutrition and health, to resolve the increasing pressure on natural habitat in an era of climate change.

Dr. K. K. Narayanan, Chairman of MSSBG- Advisory Committee welcomed the gathering. Dr. Madhura Swaminathan, Chairperson, MSSRF presided over the function. She stated on the necessity of the Botanical garden, the Community Agro-biodiversity Centre as the extended arm of the new garden and continues with its focus on the social and cultural dimensions of our developmental interventions.

Dr. Sarada Krishnan, Director of Denver Botanic Garden delivered the keynote speech on ‘Role of botanic gardens in conserving biodiversity. The chief guest for the day, Smt. Umaiba Moideenkutty, unveiled the portrait of Late Sri. A. Ratnam Swami, the founder chairman of the management advisory committee of CAbC.

A strategic approach has proposed for the garden to be a lead international entity with powerful, symbolic and aesthetic dimension on entertainment and education. The project on an expanded phase of garden to know the community and to know ourenvironment has 3 main zones of Community, Agrobiodiversity and RET(Rare, Endemic and Threatened)/Conservation. The project on garden with nearly 30 components for the involvement of viability of human value, contribute to sustainable development, to convert the society to conservation thus to heritage in addition to amusement.It will be a powerful global network for education, entertainment, to recue the species for planet and people. The components as butterfly garden, sensory garden, children’s garden, aquatic, rockery and Swamp garden, wild food garden along with Western Ghats native garden carry a diverse involvement for the society.
